The Research Group for Emotions, Sociality, and Computing works in the Tampere Unit for Computer-Human Interaction (TAUCHI). TAUCHI is a part of the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Tampere. The research group does mainly basic research on human emotions. We are studying, for example, how emotionally and socially meaningful information affects the functioning of autonomous and central nervous system. We are also studying the possibilities of using this knowledge to improve human-computer interaction, HCI.
In general, we aim to develop new type of HCI by combining research from various disciplines, for example, from psychology, computer science, and engineering. A central aim of the research group is to develop HCI in a way that it would parallel more to the mechanisms of human-human communication. As human social communication importantly rests on exchanges of non-verbal signals, we have chosen to study the possibilities of utilizing socially and emotionally significant information in order to improve human-computer interaction.
